Introduction

Weekends away in small towns are a popular past time in South Africa, and for good reason. The best places are far away from the Hustle and Bustle of the big cities and Riebeek-Kasteel is no exception.

Riebeek Kasteel is a farm town in the lovely Riebeek Valley, among the Swartland vineyards and farms. Only 45 minutes drive from Cape Town, this is a quick getaway for city slickers looking for a country get away.

What to do

Riebeek Kasteel, like many other small towns, have loads of hidden gems that make the trip worth while. We have a few great ideas for you, we hope you enjoy these spots if you visit Riebeek Kasteel.

Olive Tasting

Why not try some olives while you are in town? A great little place is called The Olive Boutique on the main road.

Wine Tasting

Try some (free) wine tasting at Pulpit Rock (www.pulpitrock.co.za / +27 22 461-2025), and Allesverloren (www.allesverloren.co.za / + 27 22 461 2320). Both wine farms are award winning, and if you time it right, you can grab something to eat to stave away alcohol. I know you are supposed to spit out the wine when you wine tasting, but out philosophy is waste not want not, so spitting is not for us!

Where to Eat?

There are plenty of places to choose, we recommend the following places you shouldn’t miss.

  • Breakfast at De Jonge Cafe (+27 22 448 1199). Try the full English breakfast, and finish off with authentic Italian ice cream!
  • Lunch at Café Felix (+27 22 448 1170). Try the specials menu, if they have it ask for the butternut lasagne
  • An absolute must would be Dinner at Bar Bar Black Sheep (+27 22 448 1031). Everything is fantastic, so make sure you make a booking!

Where to stay?

We recommend staying at Cafe´Felix (www.cafefelix.co.za). They have a lovely loft room, which is über luxurious and has all the creature comforts. There is also a wonderful restaurant, so you can kill two birds with one stone… Call +27 22 448 1170 if you would like to make a reservation for accommodation or the restaurant.

How to find Riebeek Kasteel…

The drive is lovely, especially when you get past Malmesbury.

  • From Cape Town, take the N7 motorway North, away from Cape Town towards Malmesbury for +- 45 km.
  • When you see Malmesbury exit, take the off ramp to the left, stay left and when you reach the road, take a left. (You do a big long loop and go under the motorway you were just on)
  • Stay in this road and go over 1st set of traffic lights (robots)
  • Go passed the Ford and Mazda stores that will be on your leftd
  • Go passed the Opel / GM dealership garage on left
  • Don’t speed through the town, there is a speed trap lurking!
  • At the second traffic light (robot), go straight over (it is a small road)
  • Go up the hill and at the first stop turn right
  • This is a bad road (and a favourite place for speed traps) so drive slow until you get the Riebeek-Kasteel turn off to the left
  • Drive about 20km and find Kloovenburg farm on left
  • Turn left into Riebeek Kasteel
  • At the first road with the sign board for the Police Station turn right
  • Go down the hill, and and when you reach the stop street you are in the town centre

Nicko Soper (21 Posts So Far )

Born in England, Nick has been living in Cape Town on and off for quite a while and even spent a year here and there at a few local schools. While doing his degree, at the University of Plymouth in England, he decided that a good lifestyle was more important than a stable job.

Having spent some childhood years in Cape Town, there wasn’t much of a descision to be made and when he had the opportunity to work in Cape Town for a year, he jumped at the chance. One of Nick’s early ambitions was to learn more about the heart of Cape Town, the streets, the places and get a job! Another of Nick’s passions is surfing, which is probably the real reason he came to Cape Town, so if there are any articles on beaches and the word surf pops up a lot, you will know why! Always looking for new things to do, new people, new restaurants and places to go, we hope Nick will keep the website fresh and fun.
